Keskustelu:Hungarian Historical Phonology ígér
The comparison between Hungarian and Khanty does not look so problematic to me. The sound correspondence in Hung. ígér ~ Kh. *ēŋkǝr- is similar to that in Hung. íny 'gums' ~ Kh. *ǟɣǝṇ (~ Ms. *īɣǝn). Proto-Khanty *ē is the mid ablaut grade of underlying *ǟ, so these two words are probably examples of the same correspondence. The word for 'gums' is of Uralic origin and can probably be reconstructed as PU *jikin(i-), so one could suggest that ígér and its Khanty cognate reflect a proto-form *jiŋ(k)VrV-. --Ante Aikio (keskustelu) 15. helmikuuta 2023 kello 22.06 (EET)
- Good point, thank you. I had assumed that Hungarian í in íny was due to the loss of *k but perhaps *ji- > í is indeed regular (similarly as *jï- > í).
- I still have to check the possible Turkic connections discussed by Munkácsi and Gombocz. --Sampsa Holopainen (keskustelu) 16. helmikuuta 2023 kello 15.54 (EET)
