Commentary
Different Uralic etymologies have been suggested for the Hungarian word: Aikio (2002) offers the most convincing etymology, assuming that Hu jár reflects PU *juri- 'to go around'. The etymology involves the rare (and irregular?) change PU *u > Hu á, which makes it somewhat uncertain.
A Turkic loan etymology is suggested by Palló (1982).
