Keskustelu:Hungarian Historical Phonology kés
Hungarian kés comes, as per dialect and medieval evidence, from Old Hungarian *ǟ and not *ē. This means, I think, that the comparison is at least within Ugric not as poor as it may first look, and probably no borrowing from a third source needs to be assumed. Both Hungarian and Khanty could simply continue *käčV; and in this case, short *ä̆ in Mansi could indicate an early borrowing from Khanty, after the shift *ä > *ä̆ but before the strengthening *ä̆ > e ~ ö in most dialects.
- Thank you for adding this, I am aware of the Old Hungarian evidence, this should have been mentioned. An early loan from Khanty to Mansi is probably possible, but this could still mean that the word for 'knife' is ultimately borrowed from somewhere.--Sampsa Holopainen (keskustelu) 22. helmikuuta 2023 kello 19.53 (EET)
This is of no help for Mari though, really only makes things worse since now also *ä > *ü̆ would be irregular. --J. Pystynen (lähetä viesti) 22. helmikuuta 2023 kello 19.37 (EET)
