Commentary
This is considered a Proto-Finno-Ugric etymology in the MSzFE and the UEW, and the same view is repeated by DEWOS and Abondolo (1996: 44) who assumes that Mansi LM, N ūnt 'forest' could be a cognate instead of borrowing as assumed by most sources.
The Finno-Ugric etymology cannot be correct as such, as the assumed Saami cognate is a Germanic loan (Aikio 2009: 267). Hungarian and Khanty cognates correspond to each other regularly, however, so a Proto-Ugric word can be reconstructed. The Khanty dialects point to Proto-Khanty *a that can reflect PU *a or *o in -i-stems (Zhivlov 2014: 124), and Hungarian a can be explained similarly.
Conclusion
Based on the Hungarian and Khanty cognates, a Proto-Ugric word can be reconstructed.
