Commentary

The Ugric etymology is irregular, as Hungarian z clearly cannot reflect the cluster *ńć that has to be reconstructed to account for the Ob-Ugric words. UEW considers the etymology uncertain and it is not even mentioned by MSzFE. EWUng considers the Ugric etymology improbable. The Ob-Ugric words are regular cognates with each other (Honti 1982).

Conclusion

The Ugric etymology should be rejected. No competing etymologies for Hungarian vézna are known.
