Commentary
This Ugric etymology is listed as uncertain by the UEW and also DEWOS (1409) mentions the connection with a question mark. Semantically the etymology is unproblematic, but there are some phonological problems: Khanty vocalism points to Proto-Khanty *i̮ (cf. Zhivlov 2007: 282) but this does not correspond regularly to Hungarian á. Hungarian j as the hiatus filler (instead of v) is also unexpected.
