Commentary

The Ob-Ugric cognates are regular (see Honti 1982: 126; Abondolo 1996: 85) and point to an old *a_i stem. Abondolo accepts the Ugric etymology. Hungarian o can probably be explained as a conditioned change before *lt (cf. Hu holt dead < *kali-).

MSzFE (82, 499-500 )and UEW argue that Hungarian alkot 'schaffen, bilden' belongs here too but this is not clear at all.

Conclusion

The Ugric etymology seems plausible.
