Commentary

The vowel-correspondences are regular, so a stem *mälä- could be reconstructed for Proto-Ugric. The words in Khanty, Mansi and Hungarian reflect independent derivatives: no Proto-Ugric derivative can be reconstructed.

UEW considers this stem a nomenverbum, but there are no arguments for this, as no verbal stem is attested anywhere in Ugric.
