MSzFE, UEW and EWUng consider the etymology uncertain.

The Hungarian vowel é rather points to *e, but due to the contraction and loss of *k it is difficult to assess the vowel-reconstruction.

UEW mentions the possibility that the Ugric verb can be a nomen-verbum, but this issue is unclear: in Hungarian the word occurs only in a nominal compound, and in Ob-Ugric only a verbal stem is found.
