Status of the Ugric etymology

Irregular

Loan etymology

None suggested so far

Cognates suggested in earlier research

Khanty: East (V) pĕγtə, South (DN) pĕγtə, North (O) puti 'black' < PKh ?

Commentary

The etymology is completely irregular, and not even a Proto-Khanty word can be reconstructed. Hungarian e points to earlier *ä.

The Hungarian and Khanty words are problably somehow connected, but they cannot be derived from a Proto-Ugric source.

Conclusion

No Proto-Ugric word can be reconstructed.
