UEW: compound of PU *emä, pojka and ?? irkä

Cognates suggested in earlier research

See UEW: *emä, *pojka, *irkä

Loan etymology

Hu ← Ir (Helimski 2002)

Commentary

The motivation of traditional compound etymology seem unclear: without semantic parallels it is difficult to accept it. The reconstruction of Proto-Uralic *irkä 'man' is dubious, as the cognates are irregular.
