Commentary

MSzFE and UEW consider the Ugric etymology uncertain, and in their presentation the reconstruction of Proto-Ugric vowel remains completely unclear. It is noted in both sources that the etymology can be correct only if the forms with cs (as opposed to the dialect forms with c) in Hungarian are original. However, also the correspondence Hungarian cs ~ Mansi *ć is not found in many convincing inherited words, which casts further doubt on the etymology.

A word referring to 'sprout' might well be a loanword: the Hungarian and Mansi words might be parallel loans form some subtrate source.
