Cognates suggested in earlier research

Khanty: East (V) pasəγ-, South (DN) posə-, North (O) pasi- 'tropfen'

Mansi: South (TJ) pɛ̮sk-, East (KU) pāsγ-, North (So) pāsγ- 'tropfen', West (P) pass- 'tropfen'

Commentary

The Hungarian word would be a completely irregular cognate of the Ob-Ugric words: both the word-initial b from *p and word-internal z from *s would be irregular developments. The Ugric etymology is considered uncertain by UEW and it should be completely rejected. The relationship between the Ob-Ugric words requires further research; Honti (1982: 179-180) considers the Khanty and Mansi words cognates.
