Uralic/Pre-Hungarian reconstruction

(Disputed:)

*saśV- > ? Proto-Ugric *θasV-

Loan etymology

Ug ← Iranian *Hsawš- *Hsáwšati, cf. Avestan haoš- 'austrocknen, verdorren' (Harmatta 1977: 172; Katz 2003: 221–222)

Cognates suggested in earlier research

Khanty: North (O) săs- 'trocken, hart werden', East (V) sos- 'trocken, hart werden', South (DN) săs- 'trocken, hart werden'

Mansi: North (So) tɔ̄s- 'trocknen', East (KU) tōš- 'trocknen', West (P) tōš- 'trocknen', South (TJ) tāš- 'trocknen'

Commentary

It is not possible to reconstruct a Proto-Ugric word *θasV-, as the relationship of the Ob-Ugric vowels is irregular (Khanty *a ~ Mansi *ā is not a regular correspondence; Zhivlov 2006: 125). Abondolo (1996: 77) lists the Ugric etymology with a question mark comments the discrepancy of the sibilants (Khanty shows assimilation), but does not comment the vocalism.

If the Iranian loan etymology is correct, the words in Hungarian, Khanty and Mansi have to be parallel loanwords. The etymology of Katz (2003) is possible, the only problem (noted by Kümmel 2017) is the Ugric sibilant *s < *ś, as one would expect *š from Iranian *š.
